Learn Chinese Seal Carving in Taipei

Chinese seal carving has been an integral part of Chinese culture for centuries. Throughout east asian history, seals have been used not only as practical tools but also as symbols of authority, status and personal identity. They remain an integral pillar of the arts in Asia and are often also an integral part of Chinese calligraphy pieces and Chinese Ink Paintings. In this workshop, you will gain some insight into the role that seals have played throughout history, and get to see how they continue to be used in pieces of work today. In addition, you will get to try it for yourself and take home your very own seal.

Chinese Seal Carving Workshop

Introduction to Chinese Seal Carving

The workshop is designed especially for people with no previous experience or exposure to the art of Chinese seal carving but would like to try their hand at it.

What you'll do

You will acquire various skills and tools relating to chinese seal carving. You will also be guided through designing your seal, including learning about the difference between a positive and negative engraving seal design. Once you complete your seal carving, you will also get to use your seal to make a small piece of work for you to take back, along with your seal.

What you'll get

All materials including engraving tools, stone, and other miscellaneous items will be provided on the day. You will get to take home a small work of art, as well as your seal.

What to bring

If you have some ideas of what you might like to carve, feel free to bring those along, otherwise, just show up prepared to carve away at your very own handmade seal!

Suitable for

Individuals and small groups of adults. No knowledge of Mandarin Chinese is required to attend this workshop
